US Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke Thursday to Bolivian President Rodrigo Paz and promised assistance in dealing with protests paralyzing the South American country, a statement said.
“The United States is ramping up emergency assistance and logistics operations support in Bolivia to help those facing acute food and medical shortages due to illegal roadblocks intended to destabilize Bolivian society,” spokesperson Tommy Piggott said in a statement that reaffirmed Washington’s “unwavering commitment” to Bolivia’s democracy. For more than a month, a widespread protest movement led by Bolivian farmers, workers, miners, transit operators and teachers have demanded solutions to a crippling economic crisis, leading to calls for the resignation of the center-right Paz.
