I expect their detention will be extended. We are submitting a request to extend their detention to continue the investigation."Taieb clarified that the police are not treating the incident as a normal protest. According to him, it was a "serious criminal event with real intent to harm."“Ultimately, the Israel Police’s duty is to protect freedom of demonstration, but not in this specific case. We are dealing with a first-rate criminal event, with real intentions to harm, and the number of detainees reflects that," he said.Ultra orthodox jewish men protest against the jailing of yeshiva students who failed to comply with an army recruitment order, at the home of Supreme Court Deputy President Noam Sohlberg in the settlement of Alon Shvut, June 3, 2026. (credit: CHAIM GOLDBERG/FLASH90)"Over 60 arrests are not routine. This is not simply about freedom of protest but a serious violation of the rule of law and a symbol of authority,” he added.Riot was a 'secretive, organized operation'Taieb also addressed the question of advanced preparedness. He noted that while there have been numerous ultra-Orthodox demonstrations recently, there had been no indication ahead of time about a protest at Sohlberg’s home."From the initial investigation, this was a secretive and organized operation, comparable to those of major intelligence organizations," he said. "This was not a random gathering; it was a planned operation. Several factions were involved: the Jerusalem faction, the Haredi faction, all from the Beit Shemesh area. We are identifying significant coordination between multiple factions.”Further, heemphasized the scale of the arrests and the severity of the incident in the police's eyes.“Ultimately, this is an unprecedented event in its severity. We allow freedom of expression and protest, but show zero tolerance for violence and property damage," Taieb said. "This is not a single isolated event; there are numerous incidents that require police response, and sometimes we do not have enough personnel for every event. Israel Police does not apply double standards regarding any public order violation."Meanwhile, senior law enforcement sources told Maariv that no action taken against the rioters or those who sent them could lead to even more extreme escalation."The young men, defined as Torah students, were financed to board a bus and carry out a mission to damage the property of a Supreme Court justice in Israel," Taieb concluded. "Two days ago, it was a senior police officer, and now again, an attack on state symbols.""They are not afraid. They follow instructions, and the response must target those giving the orders directly.”Follow us on Google
