A South Taranaki café owner says she has received threats to burn down and vandalise her business after a social media post seeking to identify a “family” who allegedly damaged her couch went viral.

Hind Quarters Café owner Kylie James said she was shaken by the reaction after posting on Facebook this week about a child who allegedly carved markings into a $4500 couch at her Waverley business on State Highway 3.

James said the post, which featured photos of two middle-aged adults and a child, was seen by more than 600,000 people, attracted hundreds of comments and was a heated topic of discussion on Marcus Lush's Newstalk ZB talkback programme on Wednesday night.

Video footage available online on the Hind Quarters Facebook page showed two young girls with the adults. One of the girls, who looked between 5 and 9 years old, appeared to be making marks on a brown leather couch.

Despite the video appearing to show one of the adults becoming aware of the marks, the group left the cafe without alerting staff.
