A fire has closed a major highway, blocking a main transit route and forcing emergency services to divert traffic.

The blaze broke out on State Highway 1 in Blenheim, near the intersection with Alabama Road. Emergency services closed the highway north of the intersection to manage the scene safely.
Emergency crews were alerted to the incident at about 6.45am. Fire and Emergency New Zealand personnel are working at the scene, while police officers are assisting with traffic control and managing the local diversions.
Motorists are asked avoid the area if possible. Delays while the emergency response continues.are expected.
