A day after the Malviya Nagar fire claimed 21 lives, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Thursday announced compensation of ₹10 lakh for the families of those killed and ₹5 lakh for those who sustained serious injuries.The announcement came after the Chief Minister visited survivors undergoing treatment at Max Super Speciality Hospital, Saket, where she called for the best possible medical care for all patients.‘Graft in some departments’Ms. Gupta said the government was facing difficulties because of “corruption and negligence” in some departments. “Strict and effective measures will have to be taken to prevent the recurrence of such incidents, prevent loss of life and property, and establish Delhi’s status as a safe capital,” read a statement issued by the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO).Ms. Gupta also instructed officials to make all necessary arrangements to ensure that the mortal remains of the deceased whose families live in other States or countries are transported with dignity and without delay.She said the government will implement stricter regulations to curb illegal constructions.Ms. Gupta is scheduled to chair a meeting on Friday to discuss measures to curb unauthorised constructions and violations of fire safety standards. “The government has made it clear that no building owner, official, or any other person found responsible for the Malviya Nagar fire incident will be spared,” read the CMO statement.She praised Malviya Nagar residents for their relief efforts and directed officials to identify and honour such people.
