Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma on Thursday said the state is bracing for a fresh influx of people from Myanmar due to the continuing situation in the neighbouring country, even as the steady flow of refugees has become a burden on the state.Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the 73rd Plenary Session of the North Eastern Council (NEC) in Shillong, Lalduhoma said, "Due to the geopolitical condition there, we are getting many displaced people nowadays. It's likely that we will get more people coming to our side seeking safety. That has become a heavy burden for us."As of February this year, Mizoram had completed biometric registration of nearly 90% of around 30,900 Myanmar nationals who have taken shelter in the state since the military coup in February 2021.The state has also begun recording the biometric details of Bangladeshi refugees. Of the around 2,375 refugees from Bangladesh, about 15% have been enrolled so far in Lawngtlai, Lunglei and Serchhip districts.Mizoram continues to receive fresh batches of refugees amid renewed fighting in Myanmar. Most of the refugees are from Myanmar's Chin state, while those from Bangladesh largely belong to the Bawm (Bawmzo) tribal community. Both groups share close ethnic, cultural and traditional ties with Mizoram's majority Mizo population. The state is also continuing to host around 10,000 people who fled ethnic violence in Manipur in 2023.
