Two tenants have each been sentenced to an effective 25 years’ direct imprisonment by the Eastern Cape High Court for murdering their elderly landlord in a carefully orchestrated plot in Gqeberha.
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) confirmed in a statement on Thursday that Anke-Mari Cilliers, 39, and Lee-Roy Scholtz, 38, were sentenced after pleading guilty to the murder and robbery of 65-year-old Daniel de Jager.
The pair, who were believed to be romantically involved and rented a flatlet on De Jager’s Newton Park property, entered into plea and sentence agreements in terms of Section 105A of the Criminal Procedure Act.
According to the NPA, the murder was the result of a planned conspiracy involving the deceased’s partner, Estelle Le Grange, 57, who allegedly repeatedly approached the couple to assist in killing De Jager.
