'A Different World' brought multiple models of Black excellence to the world and shined a light on HBCUs

When A Different World premiered on NBC on Sept. 24, 1987, the Cosby Show spinoff, starring the Huxtables’ bohemian daughter, Denise (played by Lisa Bonet), introduced more than 30 million viewers to the historically Black college and university (HBCU) experience at the fictional Hillman College. Then, director, executive producer, and Howard University alum Debbie Allen stepped in and made it iconic.
