Leano Vergotine will face lie behind bars plus an additional 78 years

Acting Judge Amanda Van Leeve did not mince her words when she looked Leano Vergotine in the eye on Thursday and delivered what can only be described as one of the heaviest sentences a criminal can receive in a South African court.

"You are a modern day monster," Van Leeve told the 42-year-old from Ceres, declaring him a dangerous criminal and invoking Section 286 of the Criminal Procedure Act, a rarely used provision that ensures there is never a moment where a parole board can consider his release.

"This is to avoid a person like yourself to be released on parole," she said.

Vergotine was handed five life sentences, with an additional 78 years imprisonment, sentencing him to an indefinite period behind bars.
