Codeta says its cashless taxi system is aimed at improving safety, accountability, and financial tracking for passengers, drivers, and operators.

The Cape Organisation for the Democratic Taxi Association (Codeta) has moved to address concerns that its new cashless taxi payment system could expose operators to SARS scrutiny, insisting that taxi operators are already required to be tax compliant when applying for operating permits.

Codeta began rolling out its digital payment system on June 1, with the process continuing across parts of Cape Town, including Mitchells Plain and selected Khayelitsha routes.

Mzwabantu Fayindlala, assistant secretary of the Codeta taxi forum in Khayelitsha, said the association had received mixed responses from commuters since announcing the system, with some welcoming the move while others raised questions about tax, drivers’ daily cash needs, and how the system would affect normal taxi operations.

He said Codeta had expected questions because the association was taking the industry into a new space.
