Prime Minister Narendra Modi would not remain in office a year from now, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, said, claiming the Modi government was facing an “institutional revolt” on which he (Mr. Gandhi) was receiving “inside information” from within the system.Speaking at the Congress’s National Adivasi Professional Conclave on Wednesday (June 3, 2026), a closed-door party event, Mr. Gandhi said two developments were taking place simultaneously — an unprecedented “economic tsunami” was set to hit India because the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government had removed protections against international shocks, and the Modi government’s control over institutions had collapsed.“You think that the Election Commission is fully controlled. That was three years ago. Now, messages sent by the Chief Election Commissioner are coming to me. The head of the intelligence system and members of the senior judiciary are also revolting and providing information. So, the system of control has collapsed,” Mr. Gandhi said at the conclave, videos of which have surfaced.“Now, people see that there will be tremendous pressure from the janta (public), and they realise that if they continue in the same direction, it will be a risk. What do you think? If the public knows that the electoral system is rigged and becomes angry over economic pressure, poverty and pain, don’t you think the Election Commissioner would be scared? So, now the system is shaking,” the Opposition leader said. The government might “impose something like an Emergency to suppress public pressure”, the Congress leader said.“But now, we are moving to another stage. Earlier, they were in full control, but now it’s going out of control... In my assessment, Modi-ji won’t be Prime Minister in one year,” Mr. Gandhi said.Without providing details, Mr. Gandhi claimed that he regularly received information on Mr. Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Mr. Shah’s son, other Union Ministers, and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and his sons.
