Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar said yesterday she will soon meet with the National Security Council to discuss the State of Emergency (SoE).Parliamentary approval is required for a second three-month extension of the SoE.The second session of the 13th Republican Parliament is scheduled to begin tomorrow, when both the House of Representatives and the Senate will meet. The Office of the Attorney General yesterday issued a release dispelling what it said was misinformation circulating on social media regarding the expiration date of the SoE and confirming that the measure remains in force until midnight on June 17, 2026. The release stated that reports claiming the SoE expired on June 3 were incorrect and did not reflect the constitutional provisions governing the duration of a State of Public Emergency.“The State of Emergency remains in effect until midnight on June 17th, 2026, and not June 3rd, 2026, as erroneously reported on these social media platforms,” the release stated. The Prime Minister previously told the Express that she would have “no problem” extending the SoE if such a recommendation were made by the National Security Council. The State of Emergency was declared in March amid concerns about violent crime and gang activity.
