The veteran DJ, who has had a 56-year broadcasting career, announced his departure in a letter shared to Radio 2's social media. Harris described the decision as one of the hardest of his life, saying he must now concentrate on getting well again. He joined Radio 2 in 1996, presenting the Country Show and, from 2024, Sounds of the 70s. Harris expressed immense gratitude to his listeners and pride in his work, particularly in promoting country music.
