Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has warned Nigerians against being drawn into ethnic and religious divisions, saying politicians who cannot compete on ideas often resort to exploiting identity politics to manipulate the electorate.
In a statement on Thursday, June 4, 2026, Obi, who was the Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 election, reflected on the aftermath of last election in Lagos and cautioned that similar divisive narratives were beginning to re-emerge ahead of future political contests.
According to him, the period between the presidential and governorship elections in Lagos witnessed a dangerous shift from discussions about governance and development to conversations centred on ethnicity and suspicion.
"Dear Young Nigerians, one lesson from the 2023 elections, particularly in Lagos, should never be forgotten,” Obi stated.
