When it comes to planning unforgettable holidays, there are few who know more than travel expert and influencer Stephanie Barry Woods. The Cork woman has been travelling the world with her husband Tim for a decade after the couple paid off their debt and quit their jobs in London. In this latest episode of Better with Money, she shares the tips and tricks gleaned from booking hundreds of flights and thousands of nights of accommodation over the years. You might be surprised to hear you can holiday in southeast Asia for the price of a week on a Greek island like Crete or Santorini.Travel influencer Stephanie Barry Woods talks to Aideen for our Better with Money podcast “I think that the mistake people make with this is that they think if the destination they’re going to is really far away, the flight prices are more, and therefore the trip as a whole will cost more. They have this idea that far away is expensive, close isn’t as expensive. So when I tell them that, oh, ‘you can go for like two, three weeks in Vietnam for the cost of that week holiday you’re having in Greece,’ they’re always really surprised.”She is also firmly of the belief that procrastination is the fastest way to waste your money when it comes to booking a holiday.“People get so bogged down with planning and costs and perfectionism and getting the perfect hotel and the perfect flight and the perfect everything - that they take way too long and limit their choices.”She recommends booking flights early (especially if you’re bound by school holidays) then locking in a cancellable “good enough” hotel and upgrade later if you find something better.Families who find Center Parcs cost-prohibitive might be excited to hear there are places like Italy and Croatia that replicate the Longford experience; just with higher outdoor temperatures and a lower price tag.You can listen to this episode on the player above or search for Better with Money from The Irish Times wherever you get your podcasts.Presented by Aideen Finnegan.
