The Bulls were impressive in their 45-14 United Rugby Championship quarter-final defeat of Munster last week, but if they are to beat former champions Glasgow in Saturday’s semi-final in Edinburgh (kick-off 3.30pm), there are areas where they must improve.
We look at elements of the Bulls' game that could do with some polish.
Often when the Bulls have scored a flurry of points — and looked spectacular in doing so — they get carried away on attack instead of sticking to their structures. In cricketing parlance, they try to hit sixes off every ball. The problem is that loose play can let the opposition back into the game, as it did last week when the Bulls stormed into a 14-0 lead only to lose their heads and gift Munster counter-attacking opportunities.
Leading on from the above point is the tendency to force passes when the player would be better served to hold onto possession. The term “Hail Mary passes” comes to mind.
