One person has been killed and another injured after a train collided with a semi-truck and derailed in the US. The deadly crash unfolded in Poweshiek County, Iowa, on Wednesday local time, as 17 train cars and two power engines derailed following the impact, causing “significant damage” to the railroad infrastructure.Shocking images from the crash site showed a massive heap of derailed train cars and billowing smoke.Iowa authorities confirmed that one person in the semi-truck has died, while the second occupant of the vehicle had been airlifted with serious injuries, according to KWQC. “At this time there is one confirmed fatality from the semi-truck, and another occupant was transported by (air ambulance) with serious injuries,” Poweshiek County Sheriff Matt Maschmann said in a news release.“The identity of those involved is being withheld at this time.”Authorities also confirmed that there were people aboard the train, including inside the locomotive and engine areas, but said their injuries were minor and did not require hospitalisation.Iowa State Patrol Sgt. Mike McCormick said the semi-truck was carrying a “large John Deere tractor,” which may have contributed to knocking the train off the tracks. The train was an Iowa Interstate Railroad train.Authorities said there were no swing arms on the railroad crossing, but there were warning lights. They are looking into whether or not they were operational at the time of the crash.Maschmann said the road will be closed for at least a couple of days to get things cleaned up and repair the road and tracks.“The railroad tracks are really messed up,” Maschmann said. “It’s going to take some time to get this fixed. Even once they get all this stuff out of the way, getting the railroad tracks back in service is going to be tough.”
