Residents are advised to prepare for hazardous conditions, particularly in the Western and Eastern Cape regions.

South Africans are in for a bitterly cold and wet Thursday, with widespread rain, severe thunderstorms, flooding risks and snowfall expected across large parts of the country.

The South African Weather Service has issued an Orange Level 8 warning for disruptive rainfall over the eastern Garden Route in the Western Cape and along the Eastern Cape coast up to East London.

Heavy downpours are expected to cause widespread flooding of roads and bridges, fast-flowing rivers and streams, and possible closures of major transport routes.

A separate Orange Level 5 warning has been issued between East London and Morgan Bay, where heavy rainfall could trigger flooding, mudslides, damage to infrastructure and the displacement of residents in vulnerable settlements.
