The Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA) has repaired 30,079 leaks across the country in the past year, Public Utilities Minister Barry Padarath has said.In a Facebook post yes­terday, Padarath said the work was comple­ted by WASA’s frontline teams and was part of the ministry’s efforts to improve water service deli­very and strengthen infrastructure nationwide.He said the 30,079 pipeline leaks were repaired across Trinidad and Tobago between April 2025-2026.According to the post, the highest number of repairs was carried out in the south-west district, with 6,222 leaks fixed, while leaks repaired in North-West and Central Trinidad were 5,975 and 5,935 respectively.Other repairs com­ple­­­­ted were 4,683 in the north-east district; 4,270 in south-eastern commu­ni­ties; and 3,624 in Tobago.The minister des­cribed the repairs as more than routine maintenance, saying that the work was part of the Government’s commitment to improving service reliability, reducing water loss and strengthening the country’s water infrastructure.He said that the ministry and WASA will continue to work across T&T to improve service deli­very to the population.Overnight shutdownMeanwhile, residents in parts of North, Central and South Trinidad are preparing for an overnight water shutdown, from 10 p.m. tonight to 5 a.m. tomorrow.WASA advised last week that the shutdown was due to scheduled essential works at the Caroni Water Treatment Plant.In a release last Friday, WASA said that the Trinidad and Tobago Electricity Commis­sion (T&TEC) will be execu­ting a “critical 20/25MVA transformer installation at the Caroni Arena Substation”, located at the Caroni WTP. As a result, the 66kV bus will be de-energised, requiring a complete shutdown of the Caroni Water Treatment Facility.During this period, “customers may experi­ence low water pressures or no supply at all in the affected areas”.The works will impact a range of communities, including those served by Valsayn Booster Stations A&B and the El Socorro Booster Station in North Trinidad,” the release said.It said affected communities will include Saddle Road, San Juan, Laventille Road, Febeau Village, Malick, Bagatelle, Success Village, Laventille, Trou Macaque, Barataria, Morvant, East Dry River, Port of Spain, St Barbs, Gonzales, St Ann’s, Cascade, Dibe, Long Circular, St James, Cocorite and Belmont.In Central and South Trinidad, customers on the South-West Peninsula, from San Fernando to Point Fortin, will be impacted.Communities which will be affected also include Piarco, Cunupia, Chaguanas, Lange Park, Felicity, Caroni Savannah Road, Bank Village, Carapichaima, Mc Bean, Windsor Park, Claxton Bay, City of San Fernando, Caroni North and South Bank Road, Endeavour, Jerningham Road, Longdenville, California, Korea Village, Waterloo, St Mary’s, Cou­va, Esperanza, Marabella, La Romaine, Phillipine, Debe, Sipari­a, Palmiste, Woodland, Penal and Fyzabad, the release said.Further information or assistance is available through WASA’s Customer Contact Centre, toll-free, at 800-4420/800-4426.
