The recent school fire in which 16 students died has rekindled debate about safety. Boarding schools are convenient for learners, but their management is often wanting.

The tragic incident at Utumishi Girls Academy in Gilgil, Nakuru County, and the earlier deaths of 21 pupils at Hillside Endarasha Academy in Nyeri, have revealed severe lapses in oversight.

This explains why MPs are calling for a review of the boarding schools system. They also want an evaluation of the 100 per cent transition policy and the immense pressure it exerts.
