ATLANTA — There will be 15,000 Drake Baldwin hockey jerseys handed out before the Atlanta Braves play the Toronto Blue Jays at home on Wednesday, but fans will need to wait at least until the next homestand to see Baldwin himself. The best case scenario is Baldwin returning to the Braves lineup between June 16 and 21, when the Braves host the San Francisco Giants and Milwaukee Brewers.“I still think that that’s realistic,” Braves manager Walt Weiss said. “Once he starts doing baseball activity, I think it’ll move fast.”The 2025 National League Rookie of the Year has been sidelined since May 19 with a strained right oblique muscle after feeling pain while playing the day before against the Miami Marlins. He was hitting .303/.356/.492 with 13 home runs and 38 RBIs at the time and was filling in nicely as the leadoff hitter in Ronald Acuña Jr.’s absence.Baldwin is only able to do light baseball activity, such as playing catch. He has yet to take swings. He said it’s likely he’ll begin taking swings without a ball within the next week before hitting off the tee and assessing next steps from there.“I know that there’s a lot of variables,” the 25-year-old said. “So, there’s no set date or anything. It’s just trying to get back as soon as possible, but still being able to play it 100 percent when I do get back.”In the absence of Baldwin and fellow catcher Sean Murphy, Sandy León and Chadwick Tromp have split the duties behind the plate. Both players have been praised by pitchers for their game-calling and familiarity with the staff, which has a 3.31 ERA in the last 13 games compared to a 3.12 ERA before Baldwin’s injury. But offensive production has been a struggle for the pair. They are a combined 7-for-51 with 17 strikeouts. Tromp has all three RBIs, including a walk-off hit against the Nationals on May 22.Before Baldwin landed on the injured list, the Braves hit .263 with a 20.7 percent strikeout rate in 48 games. In 13 games since, Atlanta has maintained a similar strikeout rate but hit .244.“Drake is the highest level of offensive production you can get from not only the catching position, but any position on the field,” Weiss said. “When you lose that, that’s a big loss.”The injured list is a foreign concept to Baldwin. The last time he was sidelined with any sort of ailment was when he had a quad injury he suffered his sophomore year of high school while playing hockey. He’d like to rejoin the team sooner than later, but he knows the importance of not rushing a return.“The rehab staff and physical trainers have been doing a good job of pacing me and allowing me to be on the best track to get back,” Baldwin said.
Braves hope to have catcher Drake Baldwin back in a couple of weeks
