Back in March, Google said Gemini would replace Assistant on Android phones this year. That “upgrade” is now set for 2026.

Google today shared an update on its plan to “upgrade the Assistant experience to Gemini on most mobile devices by the end of 2025.” The company is now adjusting that timeline to “deliver a seamless transition.”

The “work to upgrade Assistant users to Gemini on mobile devices” will now continue into 2026. More details will be available in the “coming months.”

When that occurs, Google Assistant will no longer be available on Android phones and tablets, with the standalone iOS app also going away.

At the moment, “Switch to Google Assistant” remains an option in the Gemini app, including on the Pixel 10 series. Any migration would presumably occur on a rolling (rather than immediate) basis, with there simply being no time left in 2025 to do this. Additionally, making any changes over the holiday season is always extra disruptive.
