Father’s Day is less than three weeks away, on Sunday, June 21. If you’ve got a birder on your hands, consider this smart bird feeder, which is on sale for $100. Associate editor Jeremy Rellosa says it’s possibly the best gift he has ever gotten his dad. It works like a Ring doorbell, giving you a livestream of the feeder and its visitors, but also auto-records any encounters. The videos are stored in the corresponding app, so you can watch (and share with others_ as they come in. It’s also supremely easy to set up: “It’s 100 percent the lazy person’s way to bird-watch,” Rellosa says. His dad is so obsessed with the cast of characters that show up (cardinals, robins, juncos), that sometimes he’ll “prop up his phone at his desk and keep the livestream on while he’s working,” Rellosa explains. The feeder is also a favorite of Amy Tan, who uses it to check in on her feathered friends when she’s away on book tours — and to talk to the birds if one is hogging the space. Plus, it’s solar-powered, to boot.
