With one hot pools closing and another one facing closure if it doesn’t sell, is the once popular Kiwi day out soaking in mineral-enriched warm water facing extinction?
Awakeri Hot Springs, near Whakatāne, closed on June 1, owners Kevin and Fiona Haig said in a statement on social media.
“Efforts were made to find new ownership so the pools could continue operating. Unfortunately, no suitable arrangements were able to be secured at this time, leading to the difficult decision to close for now.
“We are just as saddened as many of you,” the statement said.
“The company has been affected by the Covid-19 lockdowns. Poor trading conditions and a lack of guest stays meant the company could not meet its debts as they fell due.
