A British couple jailed in Iran on trumped-up spy charges have lost an appeal to fight against their brutal 10-year prison sentence.Family close to Lindsay and Craig Foreman, both aged 53, revealed the couple were not even allowed to attend their own trial. The Sun reported that Lindsay and Craig have been locked up in a hellhole prison in Tehran since January 2025.Police arrested them on charges of spying while the pair were travelling on a round-the-world motorbike tour. They were condemned to 10 years behind bars in February, just two weeks before the US-Israeli conflict began to rain down on Iran. The husband and wife have repeatedly denied all charges of spying, with family saying there is “no evidence” the Brit couple were involved in any kind of espionage. But the pair from East Sussex, who previously said they feared for their lives in prison, are now set to spend a decade unjustly jailed. The prisoners said they felt “abandoned” in Iran as bombs rained down with no proper legal representation. For the appeal, the couple were asked to sign documents in Farsi, which they cannot read.Ms Foreman’s son Joe Bennett, said the couple did not sign the documents.“We know they had been asked to sign documents … documents they could not read, and they refused, but we don’t know the details of when, or what they were,” Mr Bennett said.“We don’t know if they received a proper account of what was argued on their behalf”, he added. The case has now been escalated to Iran’s Supreme Court, but the timeline for a further judgement remains uncertain.Contact has also been lost with the couple, leaving family members to rely on Iran’s guards to update them on the fate of their loved ones. The family have desperately lobbied the UK government for help.10 Downing Street (the official residence and executive office of the British Prime Minister) has previously said that the Foreman’s 10-year-sentence was “completely appalling and totally unjustifiable” and promised to press the regime for their release. But Mr Bennett said his meeting with the Foreign Office on Monday left him without “clarity on what pressure is being applied to Tehran”.Mr Bennett previously said the ordeal was “slow-motion destruction”, and that “(the couple) have nowhere to turn.”The family say they’re furious that ministers have refused to publicly declare the couple innocent, claiming the British embassy pulled out of Iran without warning them. The East Sussex pair said they have been left without guidance as the situation in the Middle East spiralled.Mr Foreman said there had been a “serious lack of commitment” for their safety, adding they feel “let down, alone and completely frustrated”.The couple insist the case against them is bogus and claim the UK government knows it.Mr Foreman added that Sir Keir Starmer and Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper “know we are innocent”.“It’s very difficult to understand why our innocence has not been said publicly,” he said. “We are not spies. The charges against us are simply not true.”A Foreign Office spokesperson added: “We will continue to pursue this case relentlessly with the Iranian regime until we see Craig and Lindsay safely returned to the UK.”This article originally appeared in The Sun and was reproduced with permission
