The Thrissur Municipal Corporation has been selected for the prestigious ‘Paristhithi Mithram Award 2026’ in the local self-government category in recognition of its exemplary efforts in environmental protection and sustainable development.The award, which carries a cash prize of ₹1 lakh along with a citation and plaque, will be presented at the State-level World Environment Day celebrations in Thiruvananthapuram. The event is jointly organised by the Directorate of Environment and Climate Change, the Kerala State Biodiversity Board and the Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment.The Corporation has made significant strides across all 56 divisions in waste management, water conservation and greening initiatives.The recognition comes on the back of comprehensive projects implemented by the civic body, including scientific waste processing, water conservation, recycling measures and strict enforcement against single-use plastics.Among its key achievements is an innovative watershed management programme, under which several waterbodies within the Corporation limits have been rejuvenated. As part of the ‘Water Efficient Thrissur’ initiative, smart metering systems have been introduced, along with the use of advanced nano-technologies such as GeoBlue Water Forest and GeoBlue AlgoX to enhance oxygen levels and purify waterbodies without chemicals.The Corporation has also stepped up enforcement, conducting round-the-clock squad inspections and initiating strict legal action against those polluting water sources or violating plastic bans.Mayor Niji Justin said the award reflects the collective efforts of residents, councillors and officials. “Public cooperation in implementing water conservation and waste management projects has been crucial.
