In a yet another attack on cattle, a male tiger, Explorer, killed 14 calves in Indukuru village in Polavaram district in the early hours of Wednesday. Earlier on May 29, the tiger, which was rehabilitated in the Papikonda National Park from native landscape of Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve in Maharashtra, reportedly killed nine cattle.The tiger resorted to the attack on the day when the Forest Department personnel were prepared to tranquillise the big cat.“The tiger has attacked 14 calves of cows that were tied in a shed by the tribals of Indukuru village in Devipatnam mandal. However, it did not attack on any personnel guarding their cattle,” Rampachodavaram Divisional Forest Officer N. Ramachandra Rao told The Hindu.In the village, which falls in the submergence area of the Polavaram irrigation project, only dairy farmers are rearing their cattle during the summer as the entire village was rehabilitated to the Resettlement and Rehabilitation (R&R) colony of the Polavaram project.“We have deployed nearly 200 personnel drawn from various wings of the forest department to tranquillise the tiger. Six Rapid Response Teams, four teams of frontline personnel who actually tranquillise the tiger and drones are being deployed for the tranquillisation of the tiger,” Mr. Rao said.
