In the backdrop of a major split in its legislative party, the Trinamool Congress on Wednesday dissolved all of its organisational committees in West Bengal and announced a comprehensive review of the party structure.“After careful consideration, it has been decided that all committees of the All India Trinamool Congress in West Bengal, as well as all its frontal organisations, shall stand dissolved with immediate effect,” the party said in a post on social media platform X.The Mamata Banerjee-led party said it would undertake a comprehensive exercise of introspection, performance review and organisational assessment at every level. Based on the findings of this exercise, the organisational structure of the parent body and all frontal organisations will be reconstituted and announced in due course.“The party remains committed to strengthening its organisation and preparing it to meet future challenges with renewed vigour and purpose,” it added.Earlier in the day, two expelled TMC MLAs, Ritabrata Banerjee and Sandipan Saha, claimed support of at least 58 MLAs, over two-third of the party’s newly-elected legislators, signalling a dramatic split in the party, constituted by Mamata Banerjee, the former chief minister of West Bengal, in 1998.Ritabrata Banerjee and Sandipan Saha met the Speaker, Rathindra Bose, and claimed the support of at least 58 MLAs, a number that would decisively shift control of the Assembly. In a letter written to Bose, the rebel legislators named Mamata Banerjee as the party’s leader and Ritabrata Banerjee as the Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the Assembly. Earlier, TMC had picked veteran leader Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay as the LoP.Ritabrata Banerjee, a first-time MLA, who fought and won Uluberia Purba Assembly seat in West Bengal’s Howrah district on a TMC ticket, had served as State INTTUC (Indian National Trinamool Trade Union Congress) president. In 2024, the TMC nominated him for a Rajya Sabha seat.Ritabrata joined the Trinamool Congress in 2018, after being expelled by the CPI(M). Earlier, he had been general secretary of the Students’ Federation of India (SFI), the student wing of the CPI(M).In another sign of growing distances from party supremo Mamata Banerjee, several MLAs of the Trinamool Congress on Wednesday participated in an administrative meeting at the State Secretariat chaired by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari.District Magistrates, Superintendents of Police, and BJP legislators from the three districts in and around Kolkata participated in the meet.
