Rachel Nickell's harrowing murder in 1992 is now a Netflix true crime drama, The Witness.11:11, 03 Jun 2026Updated 11:17, 03 Jun 2026The son and former partner of Rachel Nickell have spoken out about her death 34 years ago.Rachel was just 23 years old when she was stabbed to death 49 times in broad daylight. On July 15, 1992, she was walking on Wimbledon Common with her then-two-year-old son Alex. He was witness to her death, in a case that went on to shock the nation. In the years that followed, Alex, just a baby, was questioned to try and find answers about who killed his mum. The story is now being told in a new Netflix show, The Witness. The synopsis for the true crime drama on Netflix teases: “With their 2-year-old as the sole witness to her murder, Rachel Nickell’s partner fights to protect him amid a flawed investigation.”Alex and his dad, Andre, have now appeared on This Morning to talk about the case ahead of The Witness airing. The pair revealed they had first been asked to be a part of the programme 13 years ago, but Andre had concerns about asking Alex to painfully relive what he had been through.“Our main concern was not to make the same mistakes again,” Andre said. “With the best intention in the world, many times there are things we’ve touched upon, it’s easy to be put in a box.“It’s easy to focus on the negative aspects of such a dark story, and it was really important for us to use this opportunity to show that this is a journey from darkness to light.“Alex was nearly three, which means he was very, very conscious of what happened, and it had a massive effect on his life, but we want people to know there’s a way to get through this, there is light at the end of the tunnel.”Andre added: “We want to use our story to do good rather than push a negative message. It’s something that would have been important to Rachel, if we can just touch one person, it will be worthwhile.”Alex also said: “It’s important to us, when something big like this happens, sometimes it’s hard to relate to them and we feel that everyone suffering, life can bring all of us to our knees, and everyone has a heart and the suffering of every human being is important, we all feel the same pain.”Moments of the Netflix drama follow the difficulties Alex went through after the trauma he faced, with Andre describing parts of Alex’s teenage years as “dark”.He said: “We didn’t want to put any make-up on the difficulties we had just to prove that it can get very dark for everyone but there is a way through.”Alex went on to say how he’s sometimes “surprised” by what he can remember from the incident, but feels “blessed” to be able to use his story to touch others.Article continues belowThe Witness airs on Netflix from Thursday and This Morning airs weekdays from 10am on ITV1 and ITVX
