Facebook parent Meta said it has resolved an issue that saw hackers hijack other users’ Instagram accounts by tricking the company’s AI technical support chatbot.
The attacks, which took place over the weekend, coincided with hijacks of high-profile accounts including one used by Barack Obama when he was US president, beauty retailer Sephora, and US Space Force chief master sergeant John Bentivegna, 404 Media reported.
The Obama account published pro-Iran material before it was recovered.
High-profile hacks
Meta claimed the AI vulnerability was not involved with those high-profile account takeovers, with company spokesperson Andy Stone telling a user on social media that the reporting was “totally false”.
