Fredrik Tønnesen, the boss of Currys Nordics, has been appointed as the new chief executive of Currys.

The 44-year-old started his career on the shop floor at Currys and will take on the top job this summer, after rising through a series of senior management roles over more than two decades with the business.

The appointment came after the current boss, Alex Baldock, announced his plans to quit the group and take up a new post as the chief executive of Boots later this year.

Chairman Ian Dyson said Tønnesen had delivered an 'extremely impressive operating performance improvement' in the Nordics, where operating profits have more than tripled during his tenure, while customer and employee satisfaction scores have also improved.

The retailer's Nordics operations account for around 40 per cent of group revenue and posted strong growth in its most recent results.
