Human rights lawyer and activist, Dele Farotimi, has declared that Nigeria has never practised genuine democracy, describing the country’s democratic experience as nothing more than a “performative shadow” of real democratic governance.

Farotimi made the remarks during an interview on News Central Television, where he criticised Nigeria’s electoral process, the judiciary, and the emergence of some political office holders whom he said ought not to have occupied their positions.

According to him, many Nigerians focus excessively on the presidency while ignoring what he described as deeper structural failures within the country’s political system.

“Nigeria has never experienced genuine democracy. We’ve only ever had a performative shadow of a democracy,” Farotimi said.
