The coastline of Pernambuco, a state in the Northeast region of Brazil, recorded two shark attacks that resulted in amputations earlier this week.
One of the victims is an 11-year-old boy, who had his left leg amputated after an attack at Piedade Beach, in Jaboatão dos Guararapes, around 1:40 p.m. on Sunday (31).He was in the sea with relatives when he suffered bites to his left thigh and left hand. Rescued by lifeguards, he was transferred to Hospital da Restauração in severe hemorrhagic shock. The animal was identified as an adult bull shark approximately 2.5 meters long.
The second victim was identified as Marcela Vitória de Lima Santos, 19 years old. She was attacked by an adult tiger shark approximately 3 meters long on Monday afternoon (1), at Boa Viagem beach, in the southern area of Recife, the state capital.
The young woman suffered complete amputation of her right leg and underwent emergency surgery.
With the new incidents, the Pernambuco coastline has recorded 84 cases since 1992, four of them in 2026.
