There is an alarming increase in femicide, which has been aptly described as the intentional killing of women or girls driven by gender-related motives, discrimination, or unequal power relations.
On Monday, hundreds protested in Nairobi streets against the rise in killings, violence against women and the disappearance of children. The activists called for the setting up of specialised courts to handle the increasing femicide and child trafficking cases. They also demanded that femicide be recognised as a distinct crime rather than general homicide.
The protesters were disappointed about the government’s failure to act on the recommendations of the Presidential Technical Working Group on Gender-Based Violence (GBV).
