All fans, including those supporting England at the World Cup, must pay the compulsory gratuity of 20%, as many bars and restaurants in the US have changed their policy21:01, 02 Jun 2026England fans will be paying an extra 20 percent on their beers at the World Cup.Many pubs and restaurants are putting compulsory gratuities on supporters bills because they fear low-paid staff will end up out of pocket. Bars serving food and drink have decided to put a simple service charge on everything. While some England fans complained about the decision others welcomed it saying it was simply “common sense”. Establishments taking part in the new scheme include those in Kansas City, where many of the WAGS will spend time alongside their partners staying at the England HQ. Dallas, Boston and New York - where England are playing their group games - are all seeing more restaurants following the new policy.American bar staff and waiters are notoriously badly paid and only survive on gratuities given by customers - generally between 15 and 20 percent. In Kansas City the Missouri Restaurant Association executive director Mike Burris said: "Of all the countries coming here, some of them will know about tipping, and some of them don't know anything about it. “If I were a server, I wouldn't be too happy if I took care of somebody for 90 minutes and they didn't tip just because they didn't know any better." Steve DiFillippo owns Davio’s Italian restaurant in Boston and serves on the Massachusetts Restaurant Association board. He said restaurants will inform customers of the policy change by posting a message on their menus and insisted the move was vital to protecting workers jobs.He said: “Our servers and bartenders are the lifeblood of our industry. We would never want them to get hurt.”At T's Brunch Bar, in Atlanta owner Teneshia Murray Butler said: "Different peoples' cultures, it’s not nothing bad, they just don't tip. They're not used to it in other countries. And so they just don't like the tip."No matter where you live, what country you live in, I just want you to be happy and have great food and good customer service.”“And I want them to pay tips. I want them to take care of the server. That's my only goal." The restaurant will raise its current 18% automatic gratuity to 20%.Waiter Slim Clark expressed excitement about the event and noted that staff have been discussing it constantly.Clark said the mandatory 20 percent is "just another number" and emphasised that the restaurant will maintain its high standard of service."We're going to keep our service going the same way we always," she said. England fans had mixed views. Dave Robbins, 62, from Portsmouth, Hampshire, said: “I’ve already factored in that tips are going to cost me. “It’s probably easier to have it all on one bill. I don’t think most fans will have a problem with that."But Phil Warwick, from Stoke on Trent, Staffordshire, said: “Of course we will tip - but we will choose how much we pay depending on the quality of the service. This is wrong.”Article continues belowPhil, aged 57, said: “We know it’s going to expensive we know we are under pressure to tip but it should not be forced on us. That’s just not right. Only in Donald Trump’s MAGA America could this happen.”
