District education officers (DEOs) and assistant education officers (AEOs) will visit schools across the State from Wednesday (June 3, 2026) to Friday to verify their fitness. This follows the collapse of the roof of a structure that housed the district project office of the Samagra Shiksha Kerala (SSK) on the campus of Central High School, Attakulangara, in the State capital on Monday. The government had put in place plans for issuing fitness certificates to schools. Though there had been some hiccups on the issue of electrical wiring inspection, these were sorted with the intervention of Minister for General Education N. Samsudheen. On Monday, the Minister had said that most schools had received fitness and reopened for the 2026-27 academic year. But in the wake of the accident at Attakulangara school in which the SSK staff had a miraculous escape, the government has decided to go in for another round of fitness inspections.Director of General Education Asif K. Yusuf said no action had been initiated in the case of the accident since fitness certificates were usually given to certify safety of school structures. The building whose tiled roofs came crashing down housed the SSK office. However, since it was located inside a school campus, a policy decision would have to be taken on the matter. The General Education department had already written to the government on the matter and a meeting with the Local Self-government department would be called, Mr. Yusuf said.
