The government has tightened restrictions on silver imports by mandating the requirement of valid import authorisation for bringing in shipments of silver grains, powder and some other forms. The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), in a notification issued on Tuesday, imposed the compulsory authorisation requirement for imports of silver grains, powder, and other forms with a silver purity of 99.9 per cent. Importers will now be mandated to obtain a valid import licence from the DGFT to clear these consignments, it said. The measure is part of a broader government effort to curb surging gold and silver imports in a bid to contain the widening trade deficit, protect foreign exchange reserves, and ease pressure on the rupee amid the West Asia crisis. The import authorisations will be needed in addition to adherence to the present policy of allowing imports of the items only through nominated agencies notified by the RBI, in the case of banks, by the DGFT in case of other agencies and by qualified jewellers as notified by the IFSCA for import through India International Bullion Exchange (IIBX), the notification stated."Silver dore can be imported by refineries against a licence with AU (actual user) condition,” the notification added.Published on June 2, 2026
