Celebrity Traitors star Joe Marler suffered a new struggle with his mental health in recent weeks but is getting things back on track after seeking help14:33, 02 Jun 2026Much-loved Celebrity Traitors and rugby star Joe Marler says he has turned to “meds” and therapy again in recent weeks after issues with his mental health. Marler bravely spoke out in a video posted on instagram, admitting despite his huge recent success he is still sometimes struggling with anxiety.Asked when he last cried, he says: “It was about two weeks ago, I had a complete and utter meltdown. Things had gotten a little bit cloudy again, and I just had a proper cry out and chatted it out with my missus, and then we were like, right, we've got to finally get on top of this, go back to therapy, and get back on the meds, and that is the truth.”He added that since “bawling his eyes out” he has “started to try and work my way through it since”. He has spoken honestly and openly in the past several times about needing help with his mental health, including during his rugby playing days.On a more upbeat note he says he is happiest when his four kids are playing around him in the garden. He explained: “The whole thing of that I'm going through at the minute is what does keep me afloat. What is my purpose? What does make me happy? What is my identity? What's the point? “And my wife's like, what do you mean? Like, let's be more specific. You've got four gorgeous kids, that's the point. And then you break it down when you go, they're the moments that keep me afloat, where I'm sitting in the garden, and the two boys are playing football together, and the two girls are there doing some sort of imaginary play over at the playhouse, all that, like I'm sitting there, and I'm just watching them without care in a world, no other thought, and that's what keeps me afloat.”Marler, 35, says he thinks people need to be more honest about their emotions and that difficult subjects like mental health and suicide can be discussed alongside lighter subjects to avoid people finding it too uncomfortable. He recently attended a charity golf day but said rather than mix with other celebrities he left after his round because his anxiety was becoming too much.On openly discussing his issues, he added: “You can side step it, but equally, why? Because I'm sure there's loads of people that also feel the same. You can still have a laugh alongside talking about your mental health and serious stuff.”Marler was speaking to John ‘Fenners’ Fendley on his new online media channel Lifejacket which mainly discusses football, music and fashion. In the instagram video you can see Fenners hug him after they finished talking. The interview took place at a training session for ITV ’s Soccer Aid, which Marler took part in. The match raised over £16 million, a record-breaking amount for the charity, with the money going to UNICEF to help children around the world.England won the match with a score of 3-2, thanks to goals from Jermain Defoe and Snowfall and F1: The Movie's Damson Idris, who made his Soccer Aid debut.Rugby star and Celebrity Traitors fan favourite Marler also made some exaggerated but great saves as goalie. This win means that England has now won seven times against World XI's eight.Marler has spoken about suffering from depression in the past, even when at the peak of his success in rugby. He described crying on his way to training sessions and playing in the rugby 2019 world cup final whilst taking anti-depressants.In a 2020 interview he was asked if he was worried about slipping into depression again in the future and replied: “There’s always that danger, but I’m far more equipped to deal with it. I’m far more educated from both a biological and emotional point of view. I’m no mental health expert but I feel a lot better talking about it. Let’s just talk about it more and, please, take the piss out of me more. That will help me move forward.”*If you are struggling with mental health, you can speak to a trained advisor from Mind mental health charity on 0300 123 3393 or email info@mind.org.ukArticle continues belowLike this story?
