The Edo State Police Command has arrested four persons, including an alleged supplier, in connection with the unlawful discharge of pepper spray during the Children’s Day celebration at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City.
The Command also issued a stern warning against the unauthorised possession and use of pepper spray, tear-gas canisters and other restricted security equipment by private individuals, bouncers, vigilante groups and unlicensed security outfits across the State.
According to a statement by Eno Ikioedem, the Police Public Relations Officer, the Command expressed concern over the growing proliferation and misuse of restricted security accoutrements, noting that their use without proper training and regard for public safety poses serious risks to lives and public order.
The Police recalled that on May 25, 2025, a Police officer attached to the Command unlawfully discharged tear gas at Ogida in Benin City, resulting in the death of a resident. The officer was subsequently arrested and subjected to disciplinary and criminal proceedings.
The Command said a similar incident occurred on May 27, 2026, during the Children’s Day celebration at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, where pepper spray was discharged within the venue by private bouncers, causing panic and affecting several children and other participants.
