FRISCO, Texas — When I got to the Omni PGA Resort last Tuesday for the start of Big 12 meetings, the first thing I wanted to ask people about was the reaction to recent comments from Texas coach Steve Sarkisian criticizing Texas Tech’s 2026 football schedule. Multiple school officials told me they wanted to let head coach Joey McGuire speak first.“Joey’s got something,” they told me. They were right. When McGuire got to the mic Thursday, he challenged Texas to a Week 1 showdown, offering to help reschedule their current season-opening opponents, Abilene Christian and Texas State. It was something out of a pro wrestling promo, taking us back to sport in its simplest form: You want to disrespect us? Let’s see who’s better right now.Unfortunately, the game is unlikely to happen. One of those other schools told me they’d taken McGuire’s offer as a tongue-in-cheek joke. Plus, Texas’ schedule is too difficult already, and the logistics issues are a non-starter. That didn’t stop Cody Campbell from continuing to make the challenge.
"It's become very clear that there are quite a few steers down in Austin & not very many bulls..
Sark should have known when he opened his mouth that he better be ready to pack a lunch..
