The Premier of the Free State, Maqueen Joyce Letsoha-Mathae, says her administration is working hard to strengthen its internal processes following an SIU investigation into her province's bursary scheme.
The Premier of the Free State, Maqueen Joyce Letsoha-Mathae, has warmly welcomed the investigation carried out by the Special Investigating Unit (SIU), which has uncovered disturbing irregularities linked to the Free State Provincial Government Bursary Scheme.
This revelation follows a public update from SIU head Leonard Gaoretelelwe Lekgetho, who detailed alarming findings stemming from a prolonged investigation into a programme designed to support financially disadvantaged students in pursuing higher education in critical skill areas.
"Each year, funding is provided for Free State students pursuing scarce skills professions at higher education institutions.
"However, officials awarded bursaries to their relatives, the deceased, and foreign nationals, as well as to ineligible officials, and left millions of rand in university accounts unaccounted for," Lekgetho stated.
