Many prospective parents struggle to agree on what name to give to their baby, but one woman - currently pregnant with twins - is stressed over the "cringe" historical names her husband wants for their sons11:56, 02 Jun 2026A woman is struggling with the “cringe” historical names her husband has suggested for their twin boys and has begged him “please no”. Choosing a name for a baby can be quite the challenge for some couples, with many failing to come to an agreement on what to call their child.Names carry a lot of weight and can, unfortunately and unfairly, affect how a person is perceived. Whatever prospective parents go for, many aim to give their children names that’ll suit them throughout their entire lives - from an innocent baby right through to them being an adult making their way in the world. When mulling over options, some people turn to their passions and interests for inspiration. This appears to be the case for one woman, whose husband is very interested in the Roman Empire.Taking to Reddit, she explained: “My husband wants to name our twins Romulus and Remus…. Please no. He’s taken the ‘thinking about the Roman Empire’ thing way too seriously.“We CANNOT name our sweet babies Romulus… or Remus. Ugh”.Famously, in Roman mythology, Romulus and Remus were twin brothers whose story is said to have led to the formation of the city of Rome in Italy. After a tumultuous childhood in which they were abandoned and initally raised by a she-wolf until they were found by a shepherd, a later dispute is where things took a dark turn. The brothers disagreed over which hill to build their new city on, with Remus said to have pointed out the weaknesses in Romulus’ plans. In response, Romulus is believed to have killed Remus in a fit of rage - though some versions of the myth suggest Romulus arranged Remus’ execution, while others suggest Remus was killed by one of Romulus’ supporters. In the comments section, fellow Reddit users were keen to share their thoughts. One person said: “Omg cringe - even if Ancient Rome is his greatest passion in life, this is so cringey I am embarrassed on his behalf. There are so many Roman names to choose from without being lame and goofy about it.“Besides, if the Roman Empire really is his passion, then he’s centuries off because the Romulus and Remus story is from the founding of Rome, not the Roman Empire.”Another joked: “Perfect, their middle names can be Cain and Abel”, in reference to the Bible story about Adam and Eve’s sons which similarly ends in fratricide - Cain killed his brother Abel, and was sentenced to be a restless wanderer in exile.A third replied: “Romulus Abel and Remus Cain so you never know which twin will kill the other”.A fourth said: “May I offer August and Julian? Variants of Augustus and Julius…”Someone else commented: “I’d go with Julius and Marcus. Only other Rome buffs will raise an eyebrow.”To which, another replied: “You can’t seriously drop those names as suggestions without the context that it’s referring to Julius Cesar and one of his famous assassins, Marcus Brutus.“Twins aren’t dogs or fictional characters, they're normal people that don’t need heavy historical names tied to them.”But another conceded: “Non-historians/history buffs also just don’t refer to Brutus as Marcus Brutus? Or Marcus Junius Brutus? Or anything other than just ‘Brutus’… because a layman wouldn’t even know his first name. Marcus makes me think of either Marcus Antonius (Mark Antony) or Marcus Aurelius.”Article continues belowOne Reddit user added: “Does he know that Romulus killed Remus? Or that they were abandoned by their parents and raised by a f***ing wolf? Why would you want to name your kids after that story lol”.
