An Israeli source told the Ynet news outlet on Monday, June 1, that Israel has postponed its planned strikes on Beirut at the request of the United States. The source added that Washington is advancing a ceasefire initiative and has asked Tel Aviv to wait until the diplomatic process is finalized.
According to the report, an Israeli official had previously said that the military operation had been planned in coordination with the American side. The media outlet also indicated that the objective behind mapping out the operation may have been to increase pressure on Hezbollah to accept a ceasefire.
The postponement of the strike on Beirut came after US President Donald Trump announced an agreement to establish a new ceasefire in Lebanon, saying Washington had mediated between Israel and Hezbollah.
In a message posted on his social media platform, Trump said he had a highly productive conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and emphasized that no military forces would be deployed toward Beirut.
He further wrote that dialogue had been conducted with Hezbollah through high-ranking representatives, and that both sides had reached an accord for a complete cessation of hostilities. According to Trump, Israel will not carry out an attack, and Hezbollah will likewise halt its strikes.
