The EU is planning to propose criteria for cloud providers in critical state tenders that could exclude large US providers such as Amazon, Google and Microsoft, Reuters reported, citing unspecified documents.
The cloud proposal is part of the Cloud and AI Development Act that EU tech commissioner Henna Virkkunen is expected to formally announce on Wednesday as part of a scheme intended to boost EU tech sovereignty.
The proposal, which would require backing from member states and the European Parliament, reportedly introduces non-price criteria for EU public tenders, including requirements that software and hardware be developed with in the EU.
Data protection
Other criteria for critical state tenders include the level of data protection, third countries’ control over the data and services of providers, and how open respective countries’ markets are around cloud services.
