The Enugu State government has activated its Public Health Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) as part of efforts to prevent the importation and possible spread of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) following the recent outbreak reported in Uganda.
The state government announced the activation on Tuesday, saying the move was aimed at strengthening surveillance, preparedness and rapid response mechanisms amid growing concerns over the potential cross-border transmission of the deadly viral disease.
Speaking during the activation of the Emergency Operations Centre, the Commissioner for Health, Prof. George Ugwu, said although Nigeria has not recorded any confirmed Ebola case, Enugu remains vulnerable due to its international travel links.
According to him, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has classified Enugu as one of the high-risk states for possible Ebola importation because of the presence of the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, which serves as a major entry point for international travellers.
