The commander of the Babanna vigilante group in the Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State, popularly known as Bature OC, has been killed during a gun battle with terrorists in a major joint security operation conducted along communities bordering the Republic of Benin.

Sources familiar with the operation told SaharaReporters that the vigilante commander was killed while fighting alongside Nigerian security personnel and local vigilantes during a five-day offensive against armed terrorist groups operating around the Kainji Lake National Park axis.

The operation, which reportedly lasted from Tuesday to Sunday, involved Nigerian soldiers, local vigilante groups and security forces from neighbouring Benin Republic.

According to local sources, the offensive was carried out across several locations stretching from Dekara Road through Gidan Zana to Rafin Korama within the Kainji Lake National Park forest, an area that has increasingly become a hideout for terrorists and other armed criminal groups.
