Srinagar International Airport has announced a proposed runway maintenance schedule that could affect flight operations for several months beginning in July 2026. According to the airport authorities, the runway may remain unavailable on specific days between July and September, while a complete shutdown of runway operations has also been proposed for the first half of October. Passengers have been advised to follow official updates from the airport and airlines for accurate information, a PTI report stated.Runway May Remain Closed Twice a Week From JulyThe proposed maintenance work, planned by the Indian Air Force, is expected to impact runway availability at Srinagar Airport from 01 July 2026.In an advisory issued through a post on X, the airport said, "Important Notice for Passengers, Under the proposed runway maintenance (maintenance) works by the Indian Air Force, it has been planned that the runway at Srinagar Airport will be unavailable every Monday and Tuesday from 01 July 2026 to 30 September 2026."If approved, the arrangement could affect flight schedules on those days during the three-month period.Complete Runway Shutdown Proposed For OctoberAirport authorities have also proposed a temporary halt to all runway operations from 01 October 2026 to 16 October 2026.Providing details of the plan, the airport stated, "Additionally, it is also proposed to keep the runway operations completely closed from 01 October 2026 to 16 October 2026. Passengers are informed that the above plan is currently in the planning phase. As soon as it receives formal approval, detailed information will be shared through official channels."The airport clarified that the maintenance schedule has not yet received final approval and further updates will be shared once the proposal is formally cleared.Airport Urges Passengers To Follow Official UpdatesAs travellers begin planning journeys during the proposed maintenance period, airport authorities have advised passengers to rely only on verified information.According to the Srinagar Airport authority, " the passengers are requested to stay connected with Srinagar Airport and their respective airlines for authentic and timely information, and avoid relying on unverified sources. "The advisory comes as the airport seeks to prevent confusion and ensure passengers receive accurate updates regarding any operational changes.Hajj Flights Adjusted Due To Operational RestrictionsMeanwhile, separate operational restrictions linked to runway maintenance and a NOTAM (Notice to Airmen) have led to payload limitations on aircraft operating from Srinagar Airport, according to the Ministry of Minority Affairs.To minimise inconvenience to returning Hajj pilgrims, Akasa Airlines flights to Srinagar have been planned through Ahmedabad. Under the arrangement, each pilgrim can carry up to 35 kg of checked baggage until Ahmedabad. From Ahmedabad to Srinagar, only 5 kg of checked baggage per passenger will be transported on the flight, while the remaining 30 kg will be sent separately by road.The ministry said cabin baggage rules remain unchanged.Authorities Focus On Safety And Smooth Pilgrim ReturnThe Ministry of Minority Affairs said the temporary baggage arrangement has been made solely because of airport operational constraints and aviation safety requirements.The ministry added that it is working closely with the Hajj Committee of India, the J&K State Hajj Committee and other stakeholders to ensure the safe and smooth return of pilgrims.It stressed that safety remains the top priority and that all decisions have been taken keeping the interests of pilgrims in mind.(Source PTI)
