Nancy Guthrie Case Update: As the investigation into Nancy Guthrie’s case enters its fifth month, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos provided a key update. He emphasized the critical role of DNA analysis and explained how laboratories are operating under strict rules and protocols while coordinating closely with law enforcement agencies.Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of NBC journalist Savannah Guthrie disappeared from her home in Catalina Foothills in Tucson Arizona on January 31, 2026 and was reported missing by her family on February 1, 2026 prompting authorities to launch an investigation. During the investigation, led by the Pima County sheriff department and later joined by the FBI, authorities were quick to believe that Nancy was abducted from her home against her will. Search efforts intensified as investigators found blood outside Nancy’s home. Officials later confirmed through DNA testing that the blood found on the front porch belonged to her.A few days after the initial developments, the FBI stated that a black glove discovered near Nancy Guthrie’s home contained DNA evidence and appeared consistent with gloves worn by the suspect captured on a doorbell camera. However, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department clarified that the DNA profile recovered from gloves found roughly two miles away did not produce a match in the FBI’s national database.Pima County sheriff Nanos provides updateIn an interview with 13 News, Nanos described Nancy Guthrie’s case as “difficult” and “sensitive” because “it requires a lot of work from other people.” He explained that certain rules and protocols must be followed to ensure the integrity of the case is not jeopardized.“Well, you know, these cases are difficult. And it’s not just this case. A number of our cases require a lot of work from other people. It’s not just a detective who goes out, talks to somebody, and we can make an arrest. This is a very sensitive case, but what really makes it prolonged is that we rely on labs — labs for the digital part of this case, which is very critical, and labs for our DNA, which is also very critical, Nanos said.“When you’re looking at those labs and the work they do, you have to, you have a science there, and science has rules that it has to go by. Even though DNA is not an exact science, they’ll tell you it’s 99% plus, so it’s pretty close. But you still have to follow rules and protocols, because you don’t want to jeopardize not just the integrity of this case, but the integrity of DNA as a supplement to law enforcement work. And, to be honest, take it to the other side — the criminal justice process. We have rules we have to go by too,” he added.Ransom letters and rewards offeredSince the start of the investigation into Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance, hundreds of leads emerged but authrities are still scrambling to name or arrest a suspect in the case. Multiple rewards were announced to encourage public assistance. The FBI initially offered $50,000 for information about Guthrie’s whereabouts. A short time later, the Bureau doubled that amount to $100,000, specifying that the reward applied to information leading directly to Guthrie or resulting in an arrest and conviction. In addition to the federal offer, Guthrie’s family stepped forward with a significant pledge of their own. Savannah Guthrie announced that the family is offering up to $1 million for any information that could help locate Nancy Guthrie. The FBI and the Pima County Sheriff’s Department continue to coordinate closely with DNA laboratories, as the mystery surrounding Nancy Guthrie’s alleged abduction persists.ALSO READ: Nancy Guthrie Update: Legal expert brings new kidnapping theory, says hope for her return ‘not lost’; here’s why
