A beloved rural GP based in Motueka collapsed and died as he was about to finish a regular sea swim.

Dr Martin Hudson had been swimming at Kaiteriteri Beach just before midday on May 28 when he suddenly collapsed.

According to an online tribute from Greenwood Health (where Hudson worked) emergency services attempted to resuscitate the doctor but were unsuccessful.

"It gives his family and close friends much solace that Martin was out there doing what he most loved when this occurred,“ the tribute said. ”Martin was a very much loved and respected doctor, friend and colleague and we will miss him dearly.”
