The benchmark Kospi surged past the 8,900 mark for the first time in early trading on Tuesday, moving within striking distance of the 9,000 level.
As of 9:03 a.m., the Kospi stood at 8,905.16, up 116.78 points, or 1.33 percent, from the previous session.

The index opened at 8,883.19, up 94.81 points, or 1.08 percent, from the previous trading day, and surpassed its previous intraday record high of 8,874.16, set a day earlier.
